Sarah Hellen’s menswear combines modern design with the rich legacy of rural crafts, textiles and resources in Wales.
Traditional crafts such a basketry, weaving, knitting and quilting are commonly practised across Wales today, mostly in small, independent cottage industry style business’s. The aim of Sarah’s brand is to demonstrate the diversity of these age old techniques and develop ideas in a contemporary and commercial style of menswear.
Sarah has met a collection of inspiring artisans and craftspeople working in Wales who have contributed towards research and worked collaboratively to make different elements across both of her collections so far. These include willow basketry, bespoke copper metalwork, handmade Welsh slate buttons, hand knitting, silk painting, bespoke shoe making, quilting and embroidery. Her collections consist of a range of materials including Welsh wool, mohair, flannel woven in Wales all carefully sourced from sheep farmers and Welsh Woollen Mills across the country.
The importance of each garment’s process having a story creates a sense of narrative that is more than just a fashion collection but a nod to old school crafts and independent makers across the country. Throughout the development of her menswear brand Sarah intends to focus on the involvement of local artisans across Wales and the UK to create new, exciting and contemporary garments and products with a real sense of history and tradition.
